Winter Prep for Trees

As winter approaches, it's crucial to prepare your trees to withstand the cold and harsh conditions that lie ahead. A little effort in the fall can go a long way in ensuring that your trees remain healthy and resilient through the winter and emerge strong in the spring. Here are some essential steps to take when preparing your trees for winter:

1. Water Deeply Before the First Freeze
Trees need plenty of water to survive winter, especially evergreens, which continue to lose moisture through their leaves. Before the ground freezes, deeply water your trees to help them store moisture for the dormant season. Pay special attention to younger trees that haven’t established strong root systems yet.

2. Apply Mulch
Adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of your trees is one of the best ways to insulate their roots from cold temperatures. Spread 2-4 inches of mulch, but be careful not to pile it against the trunk, as this can encourage rot and pests.

3.  Prune Dead or Damaged Branches
Late fall is an ideal time to prune your trees. Removing dead or damaged branches reduces the risk of them breaking under the weight of snow or ice. Pruning also promotes healthier growth and helps the tree focus its energy on surviving the winter.

4. Wrap Trunks for Protection
Young or thin-barked trees, such as maples, are susceptible to sunscald and frost cracks. Wrap tree trunks with burlap or tree wrap to protect them from extreme temperature fluctuations and the winter sun, which can damage bark.

5. Guard Against Pests and Animals
Install tree guards to protect the lower trunk from rodents and small animals that may gnaw at the bark during the winter months.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your trees not only survive but thrive when the warmer weather returns. And if you need some pruning assistance this fall and winter, please reach out!
